WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

The Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase, or NAPS, was founded in 2007 when two graduate students in the Creative Writing Program at Northern Arizona University, Patricia Petelin and Brooke Wonders, and Creative Writing Professor, Ann Cummins, proposed a collaboration with members of the Theatrikos Theater Company, Virginia Brown and Linda Sutera, to host an annual 10-minute play contest and performance.

NAPS AT A GLANCE

  • Summer playwriting contest – annual contest of 10-minute plays, judged anonymously by new judges each year

  • Late-summer performances – staged dramatic readings of the winning plays over a weekend in Flagstaff

  • Additionally – writing workshops, spooky Halloween plays, and other literary and theater partnerships throughout the year

WHO WE ARE

Our mission is to encourage new plays by novice and seasoned playwrights, to provide acting and directing opportunities for new and experienced dramatists, and to celebrate new work at the Doris Harper-White Community Playhouse in Flagstaff.

Located in the high country mountains of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff is an eclectic town with a rich literary culture. Its vicinity to the Grand Canyon and other natural wonders, in addition to its vibrant historic downtown, make it a natural stop on any tour of the Southwest. The local community enthusiastically supports the arts, the outdoors, and craft beer.
